I am a nutrition coach devoted and very passionate about helping people with obtaining optimal health with whole food, plant-based nutrition. Plant-based nutrition is consuming a diet of whole plant foods which include whole grain products, legumes, vegetables and fruits which provide all the nutrients that the human body requires: carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and sufficient calories. A plant-based diet is a lifestyle choice that can be adopted for health issues, cultural, ethical reasons, or you may eat a plant-based diet to stay healthy and prevent health problems in the future.
My Health Journey
I chose to change to a plant-based diet and lifestyle in 2007 because my own health issues with heart disease and decided to look for a dietary/lifestyle approach instead of the traditional medical approach with medications and medical procedures.
There is a history of heart disease in my family, my father had heart attack at the age of 53 and survived and his father died from a heart attack at the age of 65. So, I have been very aware of the dangers/risks of heart disease and always tried to stay informed about the disease by reading and researching about the causes and what preventive measures (diet, lifestyle and/or drug therapy) I could take. I was very diligent about seeing my primary care physician for annual physicals and for any other health issues that may have occurred. I always did my due diligence when it came to my health with my physician, my diet, exercise, and emotional well-being.
So, being aware of heart disease and its risks, I had two EBT Heart Scans five years apart, one in 2002 and one in 2007. I did the latter scan (2007) to see if heart disease had progressed anymore since my first one in 2002. The reason I decided to do the EBT Heart Scans is because of family history and I had high risk factors; high cholesterol and high blood pressure and at the time they were under control with drug therapy (cholesterol medication and three blood pressure medications). Like many others who decide to have this non-invasive procedure, was to determine the health of my arteries, and for peace of mind.
The latter scan showed that there was calcium buildup in the arteries not at dangerous levels but enough there was the progression of heart disease to cause concern. So, my arteries weren’t getting any better even though I changed to what I thought was a “Healthy Diet” which consisted of little red meat maybe once a month, mostly fish and some chicken; also, the medications I was taking had not slowed the progression of heart disease. My doctor recommended I do a nuclear stress test which involves the injection of a radioactive substance. This radioactive substance mixes in with your blood that flows to your heart and they see the flow of blood to heart. But the results weren’t good; the cardiologist saw a dark spot in one of my arteries which meant there was a blood flow problem in that area and a possible blockage.
After reviewing the results with my doctor, he recommended I do an angiogram to see how much blockage there might be. I decided against his advice and decided to try lifestyle approach using nutrition, a plant-based diet. The reason I had decided against doing an angiogram is because during all the research I had done over the years about heart disease, I remembered a book I had read, a few years prior to my heart scan, about reversing heart disease without drugs or any invasive procedures.
My Health Solution: Food Therapy
I found the answer in a book by John McDougall, M.D., an internist in Santa Rosa, CA, called ’The McDougall Program: 12-Days to Dynamic Health’ which is a step-by-step guide for changing your diet and solving your health problems. It is filled with advancements and refinements in medical and nutritional information. In the book, Dr. McDougall talked about many patients (he helped) who had reversed heart disease by eating a plant-based diet. He documented their progress during the 12-days and followed-up even years later, the results were remarkable, all their biomarkers improved, chest pains (if they had them) disappeared, and there overall health just got better. So I decided to give it a try for a month and go back to my doctor to see if my biomarkers (cholesterol and blood pressure) had improved because Dr. McDougall talked about how the arteries heal, cholesterol and blood pressure drops with a plant-based diet.
One month later (after my lifestyle change), I visited my doctor to review my blood test results and my total cholesterol was 141, a drop of 35 points, my blood pressure was very low 110/65. To note, I was still on medications for high cholesterol and blood pressure, so he lowered my dosages on both after seeing my results. My doctor asked me what I did and I told him I changed my diet and he said “Keep up the good work!” That’s the last I saw him and moved on to a healthy life thanks to Dr. McDougall’s book.
My 10-Day Journey to Better Health
After that last visit to my doctor I decided I needed more medical advice on my heart disease on how to approach it and possibly getting off all medications since my biomarkers were improving. I decided to attend The McDougall 10-day Live-In Program1 at the McDougall Health and Medical Center in Santa Rosa, CA in June 2007. In the 10 days, I received the medical advice and diagnosis I needed from Dr. McDougall, 1) he took me off all my medications, 2) monitored my progress during the 10-days. After 10-days my total cholesterol dropped even further down to 131 and my blood pressure was normal. Also during the 10 days I was educated by Dr. McDougall about basic nutrition, plant-based nutrition, chronic diseases and its relationship with food and current medical research. Also, I was taught how to integrated plant-based foods into your life with meal planning, new recipes, and grocery shopping. Dr. McDougall and his program was a life changing experience that allowed me to take control of my health for the better and I am truly grateful.
Also, during Dr. McDougall’s program I saw the health of other attendees improve, type-2 diabetics’ blood sugar levels were normal within a few days and some were completely off medications, arthritis patients were pain free, the average reduction in blood cholesterol was 15% in one week and everyone experienced average weight loss of 3-5 pounds, the results were remarkable in just ten days. All we did is eat a whole food, plant-based diet and lots of it. It is about the food and the healing power it provides when you eat nutrient dense plant food.
The Journey Continues
With my new found health I developed a passion for nutrition and wanted to share my knowledge with everyone. After having a successful career in Information Technology as software and database developer I decided to make a career change to nutrition, specifically plant-based nutrition. I went back to school to obtain my degree as Nutrition Therapy Practitioner and certification in Plant-Based Nutrition. I am enjoying my new career with helping people develop a healthy lifestyle and seeing the remarkable results they achieve in their overall health and well-being. It truly is gratifying to see that people can take control of their health.
